About Dal Lake
Dal Lake is the crown jewel of Kashmir, a 18 square kilometer lake that has defined the identity of Srinagar for centuries. Often called the 'Lake of Flowers' or 'Srinagar's Jewel,' this urban lake is surrounded by the Zabarwan mountains, Mughal-era gardens, and boulevard promenades. Its mirror-calm waters reflect the sky, mountains, and the iconic houseboats that have floated here since the British era.
What makes Dal Lake unique is its living ecosystem — entire communities live on and around the lake. The famous floating gardens (rad) grow vegetables on beds of aquatic weeds anchored to the lake floor. The early-morning floating vegetable market is one of the world's most unique marketplaces. Over 500 intricately carved houseboats serve as floating hotels, each with its own story and character. Shikaras — colorful gondola-like boats — are the primary mode of transport, carrying everything from tourists to spices, flowers, and fresh bread.
