About Mansbal Lake

Mansbal Lake, often called the 'Supreme Gem of All Kashmir Lakes,' is a deep, pristine freshwater lake 30 km north of Srinagar. At 13 meters depth, it's the deepest lake in Kashmir and is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, profuse lotus blooms, and rich birdlife. Unlike the bustling Dal Lake, Mansbal offers serene, crowd-free beauty.

The lake is flanked by three villages — Jarokbal, Kondabal, and Ganderbal — and overlooks the Ahtung hill. In July and August, the lake surface transforms into a spectacular carpet of blooming lotus flowers, creating one of Kashmir's most photogenic natural spectacles. The surrounding area is rich in Mughal ruins, including the Jaroka garden built by Mughal emperor Nur Jahan.

Things to Do

Lotus Bloom Season

Bird Watching

Shikara Rides

Peaceful shikara rides on the calm, clear waters — far less crowded than Dal Lake and equally beautiful.

Explore the ruins of the Mughal-era terraced garden on the southern shore, built by Empress Nur Jahan.

Ahtung Hill Viewpoint

A short hike to the hilltop offers panoramic views of the lake, the valley, and surrounding mountain ranges.

Mansbal is deeper, less commercialized, and known for its natural lotus cover and birdlife. While Dal has houseboats and floating markets, Mansbal offers a quieter, more pristine experience.

Can I swim in Mansbal Lake?

Swimming is not recommended due to the lake's depth (13m) and underwater vegetation. Enjoy the water from a shikara instead.

Is Mansbal Lake accessible in winter?

Yes, the lake is accessible year-round. Winter offers a different charm with misty mornings and migratory birds, though lotus blooms are absent.

How much time should I spend at Mansbal Lake?

2-3 hours is sufficient for a shikara ride and lakeside walk. Combine with nearby attractions for a full day trip from Srinagar.
