About Shalimar Garden
Shalimar Bagh, the 'Abode of Love,' is the crown jewel of Kashmir's legendary Mughal gardens. Built in 1619 by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife Nur Jahan, this UNESCO World Heritage-nominated garden stretches along the northeast shore of Dal Lake. It is the largest of Srinagar's three famous Mughal gardens and represents the pinnacle of Persian-Islamic garden design in India.
The garden is arranged in four terraces rising from the lake, connected by a polished stone channel with fountains. The lowest terrace was open to the public, the second was the Emperor's garden, the third the ladies' garden, and the fourth — the most private — was the royal zenana. The 400-year-old Chinar trees, carved stone pavilions, and cascading water channels create an atmosphere of timeless grandeur.
