About Dachigam National Park

Dachigam National Park, just 22 km from Srinagar, is one of India's most important wildlife sanctuaries and the last viable habitat of the critically endangered Hangul (Kashmir stag). Spread across 141 sq km of pristine Himalayan wilderness, the park ranges from 1,700m to 4,300m elevation, encompassing dense forests, alpine meadows, glacial streams, and high-altitude plateaus.

The park is divided into Lower Dachigam (accessible, birding and Hangul sighting territory) and Upper Dachigam (restricted, breeding ground for Hangul). Beyond the Hangul, Dachigam shelters Himalayan black bears, leopards, musk deer, and over 150 bird species. The Dagwan river flows through the park, feeding the famous Dal Lake — making Dachigam vital to Srinagar's water ecosystem.
